For many buying certified gemstones is a must especially when you never dealt with a vendor before.Remember a certification is not an appraisal. Appraisals give you a value for insurance purposes (many times 10-20X higher than market values), a certification is a laboratory fact based document based on the actual physical properties of the stone (or jewelry) A few do’s and don’ts with certifications.

Do-Make sure the certifying lab is reputable, make sure it’s a lab, not just a gemologist/jewelry store with some tools

Don’t-The person certifying a gemstone or jewelry should never be a person that sells gemstones or jewelry, it should always be an independent person with no vested interest in the sale
